WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Democrats in U.S. Congress this year could seek approval of a controversial amendment to the immigration law, a move that could damage the options to reach agreement on a draft climate change, advisers said Wednesday legislation.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and other Democratic leaders met Tuesday on Capitol Hill to discuss legislative priorities in what is becoming a busy schedule for this election year.

During the meeting, Pelosi and Reid discussed what bills could pass the Senate this year, as an adviser to Democratic leaders. The aide said that Pelosi told Reid “if immigration can do before, is good.”

“It was all about what they (the Senate) can do,” added adviser, who declined to be identified.

A debate on immigration could dominate the Senate for several weeks or months, whether or not it reaches a final vote. This could occur at the same time that supporters of the law on climate change expected the Senate to concentrate on your project.

Jennifer Duffy, who studies the Senate races the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, said the focus now on immigration reform could motivate the liberal Democratic base and the conservative base of the Republican opposition.

FEEDBACK HISPANO

While Hispanic groups call for a renewed attempt to pass the amendment to the immigration system, Reid must decide what project to focus once the Senate leading to the historic reform of the financial industry .

Reid himself faces a tough re-election in November in the state of Nevada. At a rally this month in Las Vegas, Reid noted that Congress has just completed a titanic effort to reform the health system and said “now is the time to do it again” on immigration reform.

Hispanics were key to the victory of President Barack Obama in Nevada in the 2008 election and could determine whether Reid gets fifth term of six years in the Senate in November.

In the absence of adopted measures relating to immigration in Congress since Obama took office, Democrats fear a political backlash among Hispanics, who overwhelmingly vote for Democrats.

The Democrats control the House and Senate by wide margins, but mostly fear is diminished after the November elections, which are contested 435 seats in the House and 36 of the 100 shares of the Senate .
